PCP GUIDE

PCP End Options: Return, Buy or Part-Exchange?

When a PCP reaches its scheduled end, the headline choices are usually to return the vehicle, pay the final amount to keep it, or use any equity while changing vehicle. The best comparison starts with the agreement, the car’s condition and a realistic market value.

Your three headline routes

Return: hand the vehicle back subject to the agreement’s return process, mileage allowance and condition standards. Keep: pay the balloon/GMFV and any applicable purchase fee. Change: compare the vehicle’s value with the finance position and any dealer offer.

Returning the car

Check the contracted mileage allowance, actual mileage and condition well before collection. A GMFV does not mean every condition or mileage outcome is automatically covered; agreement-specific excess mileage and damage provisions may apply.

Keeping the car

Compare the final payment plus any option fee with the car’s current market value and with the cost of replacing it. Keeping a familiar car can be attractive, but the balloon is still a significant payment and may require savings or new finance.

Part-exchange and equity

If the car’s value exceeds the relevant finance amount, there may be equity available toward another vehicle. If it is lower, be cautious about simply adding the shortfall to a new agreement because that increases the amount financed.

Worked comparison

Suppose the final payment is £12,000 and the car is realistically worth £14,000. That £2,000 difference can be useful context, but a dealer’s actual part-exchange offer may differ. If the car were worth £10,500, paying £12,000 solely because it is the contractual option deserves a closer comparison with alternative vehicles.

Four weeks before the end

  • Read the end-of-contract instructions.
  • Check current mileage against the allowance.
  • Inspect tyres, wheels, glass, bodywork and interior.
  • Get more than one realistic valuation.
  • Confirm the final payment and fees.
  • Compare return, keep and change on the same set of figures.

FAQ

Does GMFV guarantee what a dealer will offer me?

No. It is part of the PCP structure, not a promise that every dealer will make that exact purchase or part-exchange offer.

Do I have to take another PCP?

No. Reaching the end of one agreement does not oblige you to enter another.
